Heliodorus: The Aethiopica is a novel written by Heliodorus in the 3rd century AD, which tells the story of two lovers, Charicleia and Theagenes. Charicleia is the daughter of the Ethiopian king and Theagenes is a Greek adventurer. The story begins with Charicleia being kidnapped by pirates and taken to Greece, where she meets Theagenes. They fall in love, but are separated when Charicleia is taken back to Ethiopia to marry another man. The rest of the novel follows Theagenes' journey to Ethiopia to rescue Charicleia and their eventual reunion. The novel is known for its complex plot, vivid descriptions of exotic locations, and its exploration of themes such as love, honor, and the clash of cultures. The 1897 edition of the novel includes an introduction by translator Thomas Underdowne, which provides historical context and analysis of the work. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
