What does the healing ministry of Jesus reveal about God, the kingdom, salvation, suffering, and the hope of the Christian?
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus encounters people whose lives have been marked by sickness, disability, suffering, exclusion, spiritual oppression, grief, and death. He touches lepers, restores sight to the blind, enables the lame to walk, heals the sick, delivers the oppressed, welcomes the outcast, and raises the dead. These miracles are among the most familiar accounts in the New Testament, yet their theological significance reaches far beyond the individual healings themselves.
The Healing Ministry of Jesus of Nazareth traces the healing ministry of Christ within the larger biblical story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. Beginning with the Old Testament foundations of divine healing and restoration, the book examines the ministry of Jesus in the Gospels and explores what His miracles reveal about His identity as Messiah and Son of God and about the arrival of God's kingdom.
The book also addresses some of the most difficult questions surrounding Christian healing. What is the relationship between physical healing and salvation? Why did Jesus heal some people while others remained sick? Does Jesus still heal today? What place should prayer, faith, anointing, laying on of hands, pastoral care, and medical treatment have in Christian ministry? And perhaps most importantly, how should Christians respond when healing does not come despite sincere prayer and faith?
Rather than offering simplistic answers, this book seeks a biblically grounded and pastorally responsible theology of healing. It acknowledges the possibility and reality of divine intervention while recognising the mystery of unanswered prayer and the sovereignty of God. It refuses to blame suffering believers for their sickness and refuses to reduce faith to a formula for obtaining desired outcomes.
At the centre of the book stands Jesus Christ Himself.
The One who heals is also the One who suffers.
The One who restores others goes to the cross.
The One who raises the dead enters death Himself.
And the One who rises from the grave becomes the foundation of Christian hope.
The ultimate Christian hope is therefore greater than temporary physical recovery. The resurrection of Jesus points toward the redemption of the body, the renewal of creation, and the final defeat of death. The story that begins with Jesus healing the sick ultimately reaches the vision of Revelation in which God dwells with His people and declares that there shall be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain.
