In the waning days of the American Civil War, the quiet mountains of western Virginia became the stage for one of the conflict's most brutal clashes, the Battle of Droop Mountain. Amid the smoke of cannon fire and the chaos of musket volleys, a Union officer stood firm, rallying his exhausted soldiers against a relentless Confederate assault. From the smoke and shadows emerged a Confederate officer wielding a gleaming blade. With one savage stroke, he severed the Union officer's head in full view of the men he commanded. The head struck the blood-soaked ground, and with it fell the courage of the soldiers who had followed him. Panic swept through the ranks. The line broke. Men fled into the dark forest, leaving behind a battlefield littered with the dead. But the story did not end with the battle.
According to whispers passed down through generations, something rose from that field before dawn. The fallen Union officer, headless, bloodied, and restless, walked again. Driven by rage and an unending need to reclaim what was taken from him, the spirit began a terrible hunt. One by one, he took the heads of those who wandered too close, searching through the centuries for the one that belonged to him.
Today, the winds that sweep across Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park carry more than the echoes of war. Locals refuse to step onto the battlefield after sunset. Hikers tell of whispers drifting through the trees, of cold winds that rise on still nights, and of footsteps that follow them through the dark woods.
Some visitors never make it back down the mountain. Others are found late, headless. A chilling blend of Civil War history, supernatural horror, and mountain folklore, this haunting tale plunges readers into a legend born in blood, and kept alive by something that refuses to die.
