Haydn's Divertimento per il Clavicembalo - The Padua Manuscript: A Critical Edition Edited by Eric Kinsley
This volume presents a critical edition of a previously neglected Haydn manuscript discovered in the library of Count Papafava in Padua, a northern Italian city southwest of Venice. The manuscript, signed Giuseppe Haydn but undated, is a three-movement Divertimento scored for two keyboards (or keyboard four hands), two violins, and violone (cello). The edition encompasses the complete score alongside a substantial scholarly introduction addressing questions of authenticity, historical context, instrumentation, and performance practice.
The introduction situates the work within the broader tradition of Haydn's accompanied keyboard divertimenti, a genre that evolved from the Baroque solo sonata and trio sonata and reflects the transitional Viennese style of the mid-to-late eighteenth century. The editor examines the Padua manuscript's relationship to parallel sources, including the Dresden manuscript (Sächsische Landesbibliothek, Hob. XVIIa:1) and the well-known four-hand version of the second movement, Il maestro e lo scolare (1778), which shares its theme with Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith and also appears in Haydn's Barytone Trio No. 38 (Hob. XI:38, c.1767).
A central concern of the editorial work is the authentication of the manuscript. The editor applies a two-stage methodology: first, establishing Haydn's authorship through comparative source analysis, and second, verifying the manuscript's physical origin through paper analysis. Watermark evidence identifies the paper as consistent with Northern Italian stock current in Vienna in the second half of the eighteenth century, and the manuscript's oblong format, soprano clef usage, and handwriting characteristics align with professional Viennese copying conventions predating 1780.
The edition adopts modernized notation throughout - soprano clefs in the keyboard right-hand part have been replaced with treble clef, and the short octave bass passage in the third variation of the second movement has been normalized - while all editorial additions (slurs, articulations, dynamics, and altered notes) are clearly marked with brackets or slashed notation per standard critical edition practice.
The score presents three movements: a concerto-like Moderato first movement (the only known source for this movement), a Theme and Variations (Moderato) second movement, and a Rondo, Allegretto third movement (also unique to this source). Appended critical notes, a bibliography, a list of bibliographical abbreviations, and a catalogue of related editions complete the volume.
This edition makes a significant contribution to Haydn scholarship by bringing a rare, authenticated manuscript into modern performance-ready form, while also illuminating the broader stylistic ecology of the accompanied keyboard divertimento in late eighteenth-century Vienna.
