The Hauton Timorumenos, also known as the Self-Tormentor, is a play written by the Roman playwright Terence. The play centers around the character of Chremes, a father who is overly concerned with the behavior of his son, Clinia. Chremes believes that Clinia is wasting his life and money on a woman named Antiphila, who he believes is unworthy of his son's affection. In an effort to protect his son, Chremes takes drastic measures to separate Clinia from Antiphila, including locking him up and convincing him that she has died. However, Chremes' actions ultimately lead to a series of misunderstandings and complications, as Clinia and Antiphila struggle to reunite and Chremes is forced to confront the consequences of his actions. The Hauton Timorumenos is a classic example of Roman comedy, filled with witty dialogue, mistaken identities, and a cast of memorable characters. This edition of the play, published in 1880, features a translation into English by Terentius Publius, as well as an introduction and notes that provide historical context and analysis of the play's themes and motifs. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
