A fresh start. A seaside bookshop. A bell that rings when no one touches the door.
At forty-eight, Claire Mercer is done being everyone's solution. After a midlife divorce and twenty years running other people's chaos, she takes a wild leap: move to a foggy coastal town in Maine and reopen the crumbling bookstore her godmother left behind. Mercer Bookshop and Rare Books.
The place has issues. Salt-clouded windows. Water stains creeping down the clapboard like veins. A cracked front step that looks like it's been struck by lightning.
And then the bell rings.
Not when someone walks in. Not when the wind blows. Just... whenever it feels like it. When the first storm rolls over town, Claire learns why: the bookshop sits on a thin place, and every gale loosens something old. A ghost from 1929 begins making herself known. Books rearrange themselves like they're voting. And Claire starts getting sharp, impossible flashes from objects she touches. Memories that don't belong to her.
When sabotage follows the haunting, it's clear this isn't just a quirky old building settling. Someone wants what's hidden in the shop, something tied to storms, secrets, and a power the town pretends doesn't exist. To protect her new home, Claire must become an amateur sleuth, unravel a small-town mystery with supernatural motives, and learn to trust a found family she never expected. Including Cal, the steady pub owner whose quiet warmth makes her reconsider swearing off romance.
A Haunting at Mercer Bookshop is a cozy paranormal mystery with gothic seaside atmosphere, a witty midlife heroine, slow-burn romance, and spooky-but-safe chills.
Perfect for readers who love haunted bookshop mysteries, coastal town cozies, and women over 40 getting a fresh start-without giving up the chance at love.
