Harmanus Bleecker: An Albany Dutchman provides a detailed biographical portrait of a prominent figure in 19th-century American civic life. Written by Harriet Langdon Pruyn Rice, this work explores the career and character of Harmanus Bleecker, a man who represented the deep Dutch heritage of Albany, New York, while serving his country on the national and international stage.
The narrative follows Bleecker's journey from a successful legal career to his election to the Twelfth United States Congress. A significant portion of the work is dedicated to his role as the United States Minister to the Netherlands, a position he held with distinction during the Van Buren administration. Through personal accounts and historical context, Rice captures Bleecker's intellectual depth, his contributions to the cultural development of Albany, and his efforts to maintain strong ties between the United States and the land of his ancestors.
As a study of early American diplomacy and local New York history, Harmanus Bleecker: An Albany Dutchman offers valuable insights into the social and political evolution of the Hudson Valley. It stands as a testament to a life of public service and the enduring legacy of the Dutch-American experience during the formative years of the Republic.
