Girls Like Me is a short story that touches on gender identity, diversity, how teachers can create more inclusive classrooms, and empowers parents to be advocates for their children. Inspired by the author's own experiences, the main character likes basketball, superheroes, and baggy clothes, all things that are not for girls.
The story begins with Alex being excited for her first day of school and the new experiences and people that it will bring, only to have a less than perfect day. Girls Like Me is an important book for a new generation of children and adults because it exemplifies the concepts of unconditional love, self-expression, advocating for your child, and highlights ways that teachers can make their classrooms more inclusive.
- Encourages self-love and acceptance
- Calls on teachers and students to co-create inclusive classrooms
- Empowers parents to be their child's advocate
- Creates opportunity for open discussion and learning with students
