Gerald Manley Hopkins by G.F. Lahey, S.J. is a foundational biographical study of one of the most innovative and influential poets of the Victorian era. As a priest of the Society of Jesus, Gerard Manley Hopkins produced a body of work that transformed English verse through his mastery of sprung rhythm and his profound exploration of the relationship between nature, humanity, and the divine. This volume offers an intimate look at the life, spiritual journey, and creative evolution of a man whose poetic genius remained largely unrecognized by the public during his own lifetime.
Lahey provides essential insights into Hopkins' conversion to Catholicism, his dedicated service as a Jesuit, and his intellectual struggles. The biography examines his friendships with literary contemporaries such as Robert Bridges and Coventry Patmore, shedding light on the supportive network that helped preserve his manuscripts for future generations. Through a careful analysis of his correspondence and personal history, Gerald Manley Hopkins captures the intensity of a visionary artist whose work continues to resonate for its linguistic complexity and spiritual depth. This study remains a vital resource for readers and scholars seeking to understand the man behind the revolutionary poems that redefined the landscape of modern literature.
