In 1976, the village of Barbizon, located on the threshold of the Fontainebleau Forest, was struck by a sweltering heat-wave no one had anticipated. Fireworks and sprinklers were forbidden as once lush gardens slowly withered.
In Doctor Brucke's Parc des Grisards, a new gardener named Dem has just arrived, the latest in a long line. Little did he know that inside this tightly hedged-in world, the mounting, scorching temperatures were about to exacerbate the already deep tensions
surrounding the family and push them all to their limits.
Dem, a wise and keen observer of human nature, will find himself intensely moved by Nelly, Doctor Brucke's profoundly unsatisfied wife, a dangerous attraction that may jeopardize his own sanity.
He ultimately learns that neither nature nor desire can be tamed.
Alain Voline lives near Paris, and has been both a graphic designer and landscape architect. Of Russian origin, he is a descendant of the revolutionary Voline, and is also related to the formalist writer Boris Eichenbaum. Garden-Parties is his first novel.
A piquant and out-of-the-ordinary comedy. - Livres Hebdo.
