The city of Fayette from the first settlement of Kentucky has been the center of the blue grass region and the place where politics, society and religion were seated in greatest power to influence the entire State. At this time Morrison College, which had expanded into Transylvania University, under the talent, energy and oratorical splendor of Henry B. Bascom, had relapsed into a good high school. There were two or three other fine schools in the city, which gave an impulse toward education and helped young people to aspire unto knowledge. The name and influence of Henry Clay had made the place the point to which the whole of that grand and noble Whig party throughout the United States looked for inspiration and the leadership which led it to splendid success. The pulpits were occupied by the most illustrious men the various denominations could supply. Looking upon the other side, we must say that gambling, drinking and vices, which go with them and come from them, abounded, as the result of the city and adjoining region being the headquarters of horseracing. Foreigners, with evil reputations and bad habits, came to the races and to look at and buy the fine horses there raised and developed to higher points than in any other part of the world. It was a bright evening when our travelers entered this historic place--renowned in poetry and song--and put up at the Broadway Hotel, that a new life with fresh opportunities might open before Samuel. There was not a familiar face to him in the city--he had forgotten everyone whom he had seen when younger; his aunt was dead and his cousins either dead or in other places. He did not remember the way from the hotel to the place where he had lived, and the lonesomeness and homesickness were deep ...
