Grumpy Grandpa and Gary the Groundhog is a warm, humorous children's story about an unexpected friendship.
Grandpa discovers that a clever groundhog named Gary has dug a burrow beneath the blue tractor in his old red barn. Grandpa fills in the tunnel and sets a live trap, but Gary always stays one step ahead. Instead of catching Gary, Grandpa accidentally traps Sally the Skunk, Ollie the Opossum, and Ricky the Raccoon.
Running out of ideas, Grandpa brings in Kelso, his German Shepherd, to help. But Gary is too sneaky and hides among the old tarps he has used to make his underground home warm and comfortable.
Then Grandpa discovers Gary's secret: he is not living there alone. Gary has a wife, Greta, and three young groundhogs-Gus, Gertie, and Gabby. Once Grandpa understands that the burrow is their family home, his grumpy attitude begins to soften.
Grandpa decides to let the family stay. Before long, he enjoys watching the young groundhogs play near the barn, and Gary is no longer an unwanted visitor. He has become Grandpa's friend.
The story teaches young readers about patience, kindness, family, understanding others, and looking beyond first impressions. Each illustration also contains a hidden ladybug for children to find.
