The Great Wide Open

In the continuing saga of the Duncan family introduced in The Chimney, Micah Duncan, now a young attorney, becomes frustrated by the politics of reconstruction in Missouri and heads out West to see the continent's untamed stretches before they vanish. He becomes enamored with the beautiful daughter of a cavalry commander and encounters corruption, greed, and the stunning victory of Native American warriors over Custer's vaunted 7th Cavalry. Micah's story carries you through his own moral decline and redemption as he achieves prominence as a leading citizen of a mining boom town in the Colorado Rockies and witnesses first-hand the transformation of the American West.

Tom Owens was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and raised with one foot there and the other foot on family property in Bates County, Missouri. Tom's writing includes thirty short stories and sketches. The first novel in his trilogy is The Chimney, followed by the sequel The Great Wide Open. When he's not writing, Tom is a docent at the Wornall/Majors House Museums in Kansas City, Missouri, sharing his love of history and stories of our past with others.
