The Great Fortress by William Wood is a historical fiction novel that takes readers on a journey through the 16th century. The story is set in the year 1570 and follows the life of a young man named Richard, who is the son of a wealthy English merchant. Richard is a skilled archer and is sent to work at a fortress in France, where he meets a group of soldiers who become his friends. As Richard settles into his new life at the fortress, he becomes embroiled in a plot to overthrow the French king. The plot is led by a group of Protestant rebels who are fighting against the Catholic monarchy. Richard must navigate the dangerous political landscape of 16th century France, all while trying to protect his friends and the fortress he has come to call home. The Great Fortress is a thrilling adventure story that is filled with action, intrigue, and romance. The novel is meticulously researched, and the author has done an excellent job of bringing the historical setting to life. The characters are well-developed, and readers will quickly find themselves invested in their fates.Overall, The Great Fortress is an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys historical fiction or action-packed adventure stories. The book is well-written, engaging, and will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.The preliminary isolation of Louisbourg was a particularly effective stroke of naval strategy. Even before 1758 began the first French fleet that left for Louisbourg had been shadowed from Toulon and had been shut up in Cartagena. A second French fleet was then sent to help the first one out. But it was attacked on the way and totally defeated. In April the first fleet made another attempt to sail; but it was chased into Rochefort by Hawke and put out of action for the rest of the campaign. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
