The resulting dog became popular among German nobility and was used for hunting large game, guarding estates, and as a symbol of prestige.
Originally known as the Deutsche Dogge (German Dog), the breed gained international recognition as the Great Dane due to its grand stature. Despite its name, the Great Dane does not have any direct association with Denmark, and the name is likely a result of a French naturalist's admiration for the breed during the 18th century.
