The floor of the Bureau of Narrative Integrity hummed with a frequency that didn't exist in the natural world. It was a low, sub-audible vibration, the mechanical heartbeat of the Consensus Engine. For most, it was a comfort-a reminder that order was being maintained. For Dr. Aris Thorne, sitting at his terminal in the heart of the sector, it felt like a dentist's drill against the inside of his skull.
His fingers danced across the haptic interface. Validation. Alignment. Scrub.
On his primary display, a grainy archival photo of the 2034 Sector 7 Reconstruction flickered. Beside it, the Engine's Current Reality rendering projected a sleek, utopian glass spire that had supposedly stood there for two decades. Aris stared at the juxtaposition. His eidetic memory-a biological anomaly the Bureau prized as an asset-screamed. There was no spire. There had been a library. A library with ivy climbing the west wall, where he had once read an actual paper book during his internship.
