The Grasp of the Sultan is a historical novel written by Demetra Vaka in 1916. The story is set in the Ottoman Empire during the late 19th century and revolves around the life of a young Greek girl named Eleni who is kidnapped by the Sultan's soldiers and taken to the harem in Istanbul. Eleni is forced to adapt to her new life in the harem, where she must navigate the politics and intrigues of the Sultan's court in order to survive. As she becomes more familiar with the inner workings of the harem, Eleni begins to understand the power dynamics at play and the ways in which the Sultan manipulates those around him. She also develops a relationship with one of the Sultan's advisors, a man named Ali Bey, who helps her to navigate the complex world of the harem.Throughout the novel, Vaka provides a vivid portrayal of life in the Ottoman Empire, including the customs and traditions of the harem, the political tensions between Greeks and Turks, and the ways in which women were treated in Ottoman society. The Grasp of the Sultan is a gripping tale of survival and intrigue that offers a unique glimpse into a fascinating period of history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
