Grapes of Thorns is a novel written by Mary Theresa Waggaman and published in 1917. The story is set in the early 20th century and follows the lives of two young women, Mary and Julia, who come from very different backgrounds. Mary is a wealthy heiress who has grown up with every advantage, while Julia is the daughter of a poor farmer who struggles to make ends meet.Despite their differences, the two women become close friends and confidantes, sharing their hopes and dreams with each other. However, their friendship is tested when Mary falls in love with Julia's brother, John. Julia is fiercely protective of her brother and doesn't believe that Mary is right for him, leading to tension between the two friends. As the story progresses, Mary and John's relationship faces numerous obstacles, including disapproval from Mary's family and financial difficulties. Meanwhile, Julia must navigate her own struggles, including a difficult marriage and the loss of her children.Throughout the novel, Waggaman explores themes of love, friendship, class, and the struggles of women in early 20th century America. With vivid descriptions and well-drawn characters, Grapes of Thorns is a compelling and thought-provoking read that offers a glimpse into a bygone era. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
