The Grandissimes is a novel written by George W. Cable. It tells the story of two Creole families in New Orleans, the Grandissimes and the Santieners, and their interactions with each other and with the larger society around them. The novel explores themes of race, class, and identity in the post-Civil War South, as well as the tensions between Creole and Anglo-American cultures. The plot revolves around the love affair between Honor����� Grandissime, a wealthy Creole plantation owner, and Clotilde, a woman of mixed race who is also pursued by a wealthy Anglo-American planter. The novel also features a cast of colorful characters, including slaves, free people of color, and members of the white ruling class, all of whom are struggling to find their place in a rapidly changing society. The Grandissimes is considered a classic of Southern literature and an important work in the canon of American realism.1908.
