What happens when a corrupt town becomes convinced that an important government inspector has arrived in disguise?
In a provincial Russian town, the local officials are thrown into panic by news that a secret inspector is coming from St Petersburg to investigate them. Terrified that their bribery, incompetence, and abuses of power will be exposed, they scramble to hide their misconduct and make themselves appear respectable.
Their fear leads them to a disastrous mistake when they assume that Khlestakov, a young and rather insignificant civil servant staying at the local inn, must be the mysterious inspector. As officials compete to impress him with hospitality, money, and attention, the misunderstanding grows into an increasingly absurd comedy of vanity, corruption, deception, and self-preservation.
The Government Inspector (Ревизор) is Nikolai Gogol's brilliant satire of bureaucracy and human weakness, exposing a world in which greed, fear, status, and appearances matter more than truth.
This edition has been translated directly from the original Russian into clear, easy-to-read modern English. The translation stays close to the meaning, humour, characters, and dramatic action of Gogol's original while making the play more accessible to readers today.
