A landmark second-century Christian text restored in an authoritative, expanded critical edition.
Translated directly from the Coptic (Sub-Akhmimic dialect of Codex Berolinensis 8502) and systematically collated against the surviving third-century Greek fragments (P.Ryl. III 463 and P.Oxy. L 3525), this volume presents the definitive English edition of the Gospel of Mary Magdalene-the foundational text on visionary authority, spiritual psychology, and female discipleship in early Christianity.
Unlike the synoptic narratives, the Gospel of Mary does not offer biographical retrospection or an ecclesiastical manual. It unfolds a dramatic post-resurrection revelation dialogue and an introspective soteriology: the ascending soul's journey through the hostile planetary archons, the ontological illusion of sin, and the reintegration into the inner Perfect Man.
What this Expanded Edition includes:- Rigorous Direct Translation: Pure rendering of the Coptic text with strict Leiden conventions, preserving lacunae and integrating parallel Greek readings without speculative interpolations.
- Comprehensive Two-Part Architecture: Part I delivers the primary text (annotated chapters I-V), Dramatis Personae, and historical-manuscript background; Part II compiles twenty-five detailed monographic studies on early Christian history, literary genre, and textual transmission.
- Visual Diagram of the Soul's Ascent: A high-definition, vectorized conceptual map illustrating the four cosmic powers and the seven forms of Wrath (Pakhre).
- Cutting-Edge Papyrological Research: An extensive critical study analyzing the recent academic debate surrounding P.Oxy. 5577 (Chapa 2023; Parkhouse 2024; Schrader Polczer 2025) and its proposed relation to the lost vision section.
- Reception & Iconographic History: Tracing Magdalene's historical transformation from Apostle of the Apostles to medieval penitent (under Pope Gregory I) and her contemporary liturgical restitution, featuring analyses of the Noli me tangere visual tradition.
- Specialized Academic Apparatus: Expanded bilingual glossary (Greek-Coptic-English), systematic biblical concordance, thematic research index, and a classified seven-part bibliography.
Volume IX of the acclaimed collection The Nag Hammadi Library Revealed, published under the independent historical imprint ARCANA VETERA CODEX.
