The boxes are in. The bed is made. And now it is dark, and nothing in this room has a name yet.

Nell has moved, and Nell is not worried. She brought the three things that got her through every night in her old room: a kiss folded into her fist, a little star for the wall, and an invisible thread of gold running to her mother's room.

Then she switches the star on, and it lights a wall she has never seen. It finds a crack. It finds a chair. It finds a tall dark shape up near the ceiling. The loose board by the cupboard becomes The Squeak. The tall dark shape turns out to be Nell's own coat on a hook. The crooked thing at the window is introduced, politely, as Tree.
