Good Lady Ducayne is a Gothic horror novella written by Mary E. Braddon. The story revolves around a young and impoverished nurse named Sydney Westerfield who is hired by an elderly and wealthy Lady Ducayne to accompany her on her travels across Europe. As Sydney becomes increasingly dependent on Lady Ducayne's patronage, she begins to notice strange and unsettling things about her employer's behavior and health. Eventually, she discovers that Lady Ducayne is a centuries-old vampire who preys on young and healthy women in order to maintain her own vitality. Sydney must then decide whether to continue serving Lady Ducayne or risk her own life to expose the truth and save others from becoming her victim. The novella is a classic example of Victorian Gothic literature, with themes of class, power, and the dangers of unchecked desire.I put her down at a hundred--not a year less, ' replied the parson. 'Her reminiscences all go back to the Regency. She was evidently then in her zenith; and I have heard her say things that showed she was in Parisian society when the First Empire was at its best--before Josephine was divorced.'This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
