The Golden Grasshopper is a historical fiction novel set in the 16th century during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The story follows the life of a young boy named Ned, who is taken in by the famous merchant Sir Thomas Gresham after his father passes away. Ned becomes Sir Thomas' apprentice and learns the ins and outs of the merchant trade, including the establishment of the Royal Exchange. Along the way, Ned experiences various adventures, including a run-in with pirates, and falls in love with Sir Thomas' daughter, Margaret. The title of the book refers to the golden grasshopper that sits atop the Royal Exchange, which serves as a symbol of Sir Thomas' success and wealth.
