The first complete English translation of Le Livre d'Or (Paris, 1849), the founding book of the OEuvre de la Miséricorde and one of the strangest documents of nineteenth-century French religion.
In August 1839 an archangel began appearing to Pierre-Michel Eugène Vintras, foreman of a cardboard works at Tilly-sur-Seulles near Caen. Over the following ten months Vintras wrote down what he was told. What he wrote down was not a devotional diary. It was a system.
Human spirits, the archangel taught, existed before the world. They fell with Lucifer, repented at the gates of hell, and were given bodies of earth as a penance and a mercy - matter being not the enemy of spirit but the instrument of its return. The revolt itself had been provoked by jealousy of a created Wisdom, a feminine spirit formed of the emanation of the divinity, in whom the Trinity took its complacency and who would one day bear the Word. And the age now dawning would be the third and last, the age of the Holy Spirit, following the ages of the Father and the Son - the scheme of Joachim of Fiore, transmitted through Parisian illuminist circles that had been receiving revelations since 1772, and set out here without Joachim ever being named.
Around this ran a second thread. The archangel's warnings turn again and again to a prince the book will not name: the sleeping Lion, the Man torn from the tomb, the child who did not die in the Temple prison. The OEuvre de la Miséricorde and the cause of the Bourbon claimant Naundorff are, in these pages, one thing - and the reader can watch the movement begin to pry them apart when the claimant's own writings denied the divinity of Christ.
Vintras is a name English readers meet at third hand, in Huysmans's Là -Bas and in accounts of his successor Joseph-Antoine Boullan. This volume lets him speak in his own voice, which is nothing like the fin-de-siècle legend: paratactic, breathless, unlearned, and constantly under reproach from the angel who instructs him.
The translation is complete and unabridged, made page by page from the 1849 edition and checked a second time against it. Nothing is summarized or omitted. An introduction of some 8,500 words sets out the authorship of the volume - the editorial matter is the work of the abbé Alexandre Charvoz, not of Vintras - and treats the Joachimite lineage, the doctrine of preexistence, the Marian theology and its relation to the Sophia of the Gnostic traditions, the Naundorffist substrate, and the movement's later claim to have foretold the definition of the Immaculate Conception. That claim is examined on the evidence and found to fail on its own terms: the doctrine the book defends is the one Ineffabilis Deus excludes.
The introduction also addresses directly, in a section of its own, the anti-Judaic theology of the editor's preface - the charge of deicide, the supersessionist scheme of history, and the reading of Jewish emancipation as a portent - and says where the edition stands. Nothing has been softened in the text; nothing is passed over in silence.
Three hundred notes identify persons, places, and allusions, record the printer's errors of 1849, and mark the points at which the text departs from Catholic teaching. The translated table of contents of the original is retained as an appendix, with its 1849 pagination, together with the eyewitness depositions the first edition gathered at its close - including one prodigy that survives nowhere else in the book, and that Vintras himself never reports.
For readers within the Gnostic churches, the Martinist orders, and the esoteric fraternities, and for scholars of nineteenth-century prophecy, millenarianism, and the origins of the modern occult revival.
