After receiving the sports beat for her final assignment in journalism class, Willow Watson is at a loss. Why? She's spent the last four years of high school reporting on the school play or the hottest new TV show, so it's safe to say that sports aren't exactly her thing. And that's putting it lightly.
Her desire to write an article that will blow away her stern and intimidating journalism teacher leads her to the boys track and field team. And the star runner: Jay Tuffin. Self-centered and obnoxious, but also annoyingly and distractingly cute Jay Tuffin.
Much to Willow's reluctance, the two agree to a fake dating scheme. Jay promises to give Willow information about the team and sport, in exchange for Willow pretending to be his girlfriend in order to keep up his player reputation with his teammates.
Although, as the two start spending more time together, Willow starts to realize that there is more to Jay and his story than she once thought, and a whole other reason he agreed to their fake dating scheme. She'll have to figure out her final article and her feelings for Jay in time for the school's annual Spring Fling dance, and come to terms with the idea that going off track isn't always such a bad thing.
