This book is a series of meditations on the existence, nature, and character of God. Together, they comprise a Christian apologetic-a rational defense of the Christian faith. The term apologetic, derived from the Greek word ἀπολογία (apologia), means to speak in defense of. An apology, in this context, is not an expression of regret for some misdeed; rather, it is what the apostle Peter referred to in his first New Testament epistle:

In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense [apologia] to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)

Hence, this work is intended not only for believers who are seeking a solid foundation for their faith, but for all who are genuinely drawn to the hope of which Peter spoke. It provides carefully reasoned answers to the serious questions that every human being asks about the meaning and purpose of our existence. And it does so by illuminating the divine qualities of our Creator, thus anchoring each answer in the biblical testimony of his nature and character.

How wonderful it would be if this book could simply share with others what the Bible reveals about his magnificence and beauty. But the cynical voices that permeate our secular culture would have us presume that belief in God (or in humanity's ability to know this God) is an irrational and superstitious leap into absurdity. It is the author's view, however, that the exact opposite is the case. The skeptic, not the believer, must bend the laws of reason and logic.

Thus, while this book seeks to magnify the glorious attributes of the Almighty, it also exposes the ideological fallacies that obscure his holy name. As Scripture teaches, we must not take part in the unfruitful works of darkness but dispel them by the light. Jesus Christ is that light-the Word of God made flesh. As the apostle John stated, In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4)
