The God From The West: A Biography Of Frederick Townsend Ward by Abend, Hallett is a comprehensive account of the life and achievements of Frederick Townsend Ward, a little-known American adventurer who played a crucial role in the Taiping Rebellion in China during the mid-19th century. The book traces Ward's life from his early years in Salem, Massachusetts, to his travels around the world, and his eventual arrival in China, where he became a mercenary and military strategist for the Qing dynasty. Abend's biography delves into Ward's fascinating personality, his military tactics, and his relationships with the Chinese officials he worked with. The book also explores the political and social context of the Taiping Rebellion, which was one of the bloodiest and most devastating conflicts in Chinese history. Abend provides a vivid and detailed account of the battles and campaigns that Ward led, as well as his eventual death in combat. The God From The West is a meticulously researched and engagingly written biography that sheds light on a little-known figure in history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of China, the Taiping Rebellion, or the lives of adventurers and mercenaries in the 19th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
