To approach Chinese poetry is to stand before a mountain.
Vast, ancient, and inexhaustible, the poetic tradition of China carries within it centuries of longing, exile, friendship, love, mourning, nature, justice, compassion, philosophy, and the search for wisdom.
In A Glimpse of Magnificent Chinese Poetry, Brazilian poet José Gomes da Silva Neto offers a personal and lyrical homage to this extraordinary cultural heritage. Beginning with Macau-the historic meeting point between the Portuguese-speaking world and China-the book opens onto a much wider landscape of Chinese poetry, philosophy, history, legend, and spiritual thought.
Across nearly two hundred pages, the reader encounters poetic reimaginings and reflections inspired by some of the great voices and traditions of China: Qu Yuan, Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Su Shi, Mencius, Mozi, Laozi, the Shijing, the Yijing, and many others, while the journey eventually reaches modern and contemporary figures such as Qu Qiubai, Hai Zi, Mang Ke, Zhou Enlai, and Mao Zedong.
Here are moonlit mountains and distant rivers, plum blossoms and orchids, homesickness and exile, friendship and mourning, Confucian benevolence, Daoist mystery, Buddhist compassion, the splendor of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the enduring human emotions that cross the boundaries of language and time.
This is not intended as an academic history or a conventional anthology of Chinese poetry. Rather, it is the work of one poet approaching the poetry of another civilization through translations, literary sources, poetic reimagination, and admiration.
At its heart lies a simple conviction: beyond the difficulties of language and the mysteries of the Chinese written tradition, there is a path leading directly to the poets of China-their humanity.
A Glimpse of Magnificent Chinese Poetry invites the reader to follow that path and discover a world where poetry, philosophy, history, nature, and human feeling have spoken to one another for thousands of years.
