Across nearly two hundred pages, the reader encounters poetic reimaginings and reflections inspired by some of the great voices and traditions of China: Qu Yuan, Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Su Shi, Mencius, Mozi, Laozi, the Shijing, the Yijing, and many others, while the journey eventually reaches modern and contemporary figures such as Qu Qiubai, Hai Zi, Mang Ke, Zhou Enlai, and Mao Zedong.
Here are moonlit mountains and distant rivers, plum blossoms and orchids, homesickness and exile, friendship and mourning, Confucian benevolence, Daoist mystery, Buddhist compassion, the splendor of the Tang and Song dynasties, and the enduring human emotions that cross the boundaries of language and time.
