Glasses is a short story by American author Henry James, first published in 1896. The story follows the protagonist, a young woman named Adela Gereth, as she navigates her relationships with her mother and her fianc, Bernard Longueville. Adela is preoccupied with the idea of acquiring a pair of antique glasses that belonged to her father, which she believes will complete her collection of family heirlooms. However, her mother is reluctant to part with the glasses, and Adela's determination to obtain them puts a strain on her relationship with both her mother and Bernard. As the story unfolds, Adela begins to question her priorities and the value of material possessions. Glasses is a subtle exploration of family dynamics, social class, and the nature of desire. It befell at this period, just before Christmas, that on my having gone under pressure of the season into a great shop to buy a toy or two, my eyes fleeing from superfluity, lighted at a distance on the bright concretion of Flora Saunt, an exhibitability that held its own even against the most plausible pinkness of the most developed dolls. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
