Glasses by Henry James is a short story that explores themes of love, jealousy, and perception. The story follows protagonist Gertrude, a young woman who becomes infatuated with her friend's fianc, Mr. Arthur Lloyd. As Gertrude becomes more and more obsessed with Mr. Lloyd, she begins to see the world through a distorted lens - one that is clouded by her own desires and insecurities. When Mr. Lloyd gives Gertrude a pair of glasses, she believes that they have the power to reveal the truth about his feelings for her. However, as she looks through the glasses, Gertrude realizes that they only serve to further blur her vision and exacerbate her jealousy. Ultimately, Glasses is a cautionary tale about the dangers of allowing one's emotions to cloud their judgment and perception of reality. It befell at this period, just before Christmas, that on my having gone under pressure of the season into a great shop to buy a toy or two, my eyes fleeing from superfluity, lighted at a distance on the bright concretion of Flora Saunt, an exhibitability that held its own even against the most plausible pinkness of the most developed dolls. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
