Giotto: The Legend of St. Francis as Depicted in the Assisi Frescoes and Faithfully Copied by Edith M. Cowles is a book that focuses on the frescoes of St. Francis of Assisi that were painted by the Italian artist Giotto in the early 14th century. The book is written by Edith M. Cowles, who was a scholar and art historian, and it provides a detailed analysis of the frescoes and their significance in the context of the life of St. Francis. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which explores a different aspect of the frescoes. The first chapter provides an overview of the life of St. Francis and his importance in the Catholic Church. The following chapters focus on specific scenes depicted in the frescoes, such as the scene of St. Francis receiving the stigmata and the scene of his death.Throughout the book, Cowles provides detailed descriptions of the frescoes and their symbolism. She also discusses the techniques used by Giotto to create the frescoes, such as his use of perspective and his attention to detail. One of the unique aspects of this book is that Cowles includes her own copies of the frescoes, which she made during a visit to Assisi in the early 20th century. These copies are included alongside photographs of the original frescoes, allowing readers to compare and contrast the two.Overall, Giotto: The Legend of St. Francis as Depicted in the Assisi Frescoes and Faithfully Copied by Edith M. Cowles is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the life of St. Francis or the art of Giotto. Cowles' detailed analysis and her inclusion of her own copies of the frescoes make this book a unique and informative read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
