In this fifth book in The Woodstock Irregulars series, Slim and Dean visit Slim's great-uncle Jonas Lorens' farm during summer vacation for some fishing and swimming. Slim has another agenda. He wants to catch a ghost that's been seen near his Grandpa Nelson's abandoned farmhouse up Plum Run near LaFarge, Wisconsin, the same log cabin that Slim was born in. There have been reported sightings of a mysterious light on the hill above the farmhouse, and that added up to one more case for The Woodstock Irregulars. The problem is, Dean is scared of ghosts and doesn't even want to talk about them. Slim has to coerce Dean into going fishing with him and then introduce him slowly to the idea of catching a ghost or solving the mystery of what the reported ghost might actually be. Of course, Slim, who reads way too many detective magazines and has a very overactive imagination, is always suspicious that anything unexplained is usually caused by some illegal activity, so he believes The Woodstock Irregulars must discover what the crime is.

With the help of Dean, Great-uncle Jonas, his neighbor Sven Svenson, Great-aunt Hannah, and Arlen, with guest appearances from some former characters: Treasury Agent Mason, FBI Agent Barton, and Sheriff's Deputy Kingsman, and Slim's Pen Pal, Samir in Chicago, the case is on.
