Long before Santa Claus, the German Christmas belonged to older, stranger spirits - and this illustrated collection brings six of them to life for readers ages 8-12.
Each chapter opens with a short, true introduction to a real Germanic winter tradition, then unfolds into an original story in which a present-day child with German roots meets the legend face to face:
The Spirits of the Rauhnächte - the twelve Rough Nights between Christmas and Epiphany, when the veil between worlds grows thin.
The Wild Hunt - the ghostly Wilde Jagd of Wotan (Odin), thundering across stormy winter skies.
Belsnickel - the fur-clad gift-bringer who tests whether children have truly been kind.
The Berchtesgaden Buttnmandl - the straw-clad runners who drive the dark of winter out with clanging bells.
Der Schimmelreiter - the spectral rider on the pale white horse.
Krampus - Saint Nicholas's horned companion, who comes on Krampusnacht for the children the nice list forgot.
Set between snowy Bavarian Christmas markets and small American towns where German-American grandparents still keep the old ways, these are stories about heritage as much as haunting. Children who barely know where their families came from discover - through a carved Krampusnacht mask, a grandmother's memory, a whispered legend on the twelve nights - the customs that bind them to their grandparents, to Germany, and to one another. Each tale pairs a shiver of seasonal fright with the season's real gifts: kindness, courage, and respect for the traditions that pass from one generation to the next.
Where most Christmas books stop at Santa or squeeze Krampus onto a single fact-file page, German Christmas Stories gives each of its six figures a full illustrated story of its own. It makes an atmospheric December read-aloud, a natural multicultural-heritage pick for grade 3-6 classroom and library holiday shelves, and a distinctive Christmas or Advent gift for readers who have outgrown Santa but still love a tale with a chill in it - and for any family curious about the darker, deeper roots of a German Christmas.
Ages 8-12 - Grades 3-6 - Six illustrated stories, each with a folklore introduction and a full-page plate.
