Die 280 bislang unveröffentlichten Briefe erzählen auch die Entstehungsgeschichte des von dem Ehepaar herausgegebenen Buches Leben und Meinungen des Malers Hans Purrmann, das 1961 erschien. Die Korrespondenz vermittelt eindrücklich neue Kenntnisse über künstlerische und kunstpolitische Fragestellungen jener Zeit. Nicht zuletzt bietet sie Material, um Erhard Göpels Beschäftigung mit der zeitgenössischen Kunst nach 1950 vor dem Hintergrund seiner Verstrickung in den Kunstraub der Nationalsozialisten neu zu bewerten.
