Rutger Sycamber von Venray an der niederländischen Maas (1456-1514?) trat mit 20 Jahren in die Windesheimer Kongregation des Ordens der Augustiner-Chorherren ein. Doch statt in dem abgeschiedenen und einsamen Kloster Höningen in der Haardt zu bleiben, begann er als Wanderbruder ein unstetes Leben, das ihn während mehr als 10 Jahren durch eine stattliche Anzahl von Klöstern seines Kapitels von Norddeutschland bis in die Schweiz führte. 1494 begann er zu schreiben; bis zu seinem Tod vollendete er gegen 200 Bücher. In den 36 Werken, die noch erhalten sind, zeichnet er ein exaktes und oft erstaunlich genaues Bild vom Leben in den Klöstern seiner Zeit.
Obwohl sich Rutger für ein Genie hielt und die Nähe zu den berühmten Gelehrten seiner Zeit überall zu erreichen versuchte, blieben ihm Erfolg und Anerkennung weitgehend versagt. Während er darauf zählte, da sich der Erfolg früher oder später von selbst einstellen würde, stie er in seinen eigenen Kreisen auf schärfste Kritik.
Unter seinen Werken ragt Rutgers Autobiographie als authentisches und aussagekräftiges Dokument hervor; es wird hier zum ersten Mal in einer sorgfältigen Edition mit Übersetzung zugänglich gemacht.
