Waltharii Poesis, also known as Das Waltharlied Ekkehards I., is a medieval Latin epic poem attributed to Ekkehard I, a monk of Saint Gall. This edition presents the text of the Waltharius, a significant work of the 10th century, recounting the heroic tale of Walter of Aquitaine. The poem narrates Walter's daring escape with his betrothed, Hiltgunt, and her companion, Hagen, from the clutches of Attila the Hun, and their subsequent battles against various Frankish lords.
Ekkehard's poem is celebrated for its vivid descriptions of combat, its exploration of themes such as loyalty, courage, and the clash of cultures, and its use of classical literary devices within a medieval context. This edition offers readers access to a foundational work of medieval German literature, shedding light on the cultural and literary landscape of the early Middle Ages.
