Die Vorsehung: Ein Lehrgedicht by Gustav A. von Ammann, published in 1771, is a significant example of 18th-century German didactic poetry. This long-form poem, whose title translates to Providence: A Didactic Poem, explores theological themes and philosophical concepts related to divine providence. Von Ammann employs poetic verse to elucidate complex ideas, aiming to instruct the reader while also engaging their aesthetic sensibilities.
As a Lehrgedicht, the work is designed to impart knowledge and moral lessons through the medium of poetry. Its historical value lies in its reflection of the intellectual and religious climate of the Enlightenment era in German-speaking lands. This edition offers readers a chance to engage with a work that blends literary artistry with theological inquiry, providing insight into the period's understanding of faith and reason.
