Er geht ursprünglich auf eine Vortragsreihe in der interdisziplinären Kommission Wissenschaft und Werte der Sächsischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zurück. Vertreter ausgewählter geistes-, sozial- und naturwissenschaftlicher Fachrichtungen untersuchen die Praxis, Theorie und Geschichte des Versprechens in verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, akademischen Professionen, fachübergreifenden Forschungs- und Anwendungsfeldern, Wissenschaftskulturen, wissenschaftspolitischen Regimen, Gesellschaftssystemen und historischen Kontexten - von den wissenschaftlichen und institutionellen Umbrüchen im 18. Jahrhundert bis zur gegenwärtigen Wissenschafts- und Informationsgesellschaft.
Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, wie - explizite und implizite, klein- und gro formatige - Versprechen nicht nur Wissensordnungen, Verfahren, Prozesse und Beziehungen in der Wissenschaft bestimmen, sondern auch deren Au enbeziehungen und Verflechtungen mit anderen Funktionssystemen und den gesellschaftlichen Gebrauch und Nutzen von Wissenschaft. Der Status des modernen Wissenschaftlers wird zwar vielfach ganz zentral durch den Anspruch auf exklusive wissenschaftlich-kognitive Kompetenz und Autonomie bestimmt. Tatsächlich beruhen wissenschaftsbasierte Versprechen und deren Umsetzung aber öfter auf komplexen Aushandlungs- und Entscheidungsprozessen, an denen sich viele Akteure und Interessenten aus Gesellschaft, Politik, Wirtschaft, Kultur und Recht beteiligen; und auf Anpassungen früherer Versprechen und daraus hervorgegangener verfestigter Gewohnheiten, Institutionen, Bilder und Normen an neue Umstände.
