Nach der spanischen Besetzung im Jahr 1533 wandelte sich Cuzco von der ehemaligen Inka-Hauptstadt in eine koloniale Cuidad. Die Ziegel und der Mörtel der spanischen Kolonialbauten und die räumliche Anordnung von Cuzco im 17. Jahrhundert sollten die sozio-ethnische Ordnung, die kaiserliche spanische Autorität und die Vorherrschaft des Christentums stärken. Die Bewohner der Stadt, die Ureinwohner der Anden und die spanischen Kolonisatoren, verstanden jedoch die symbolische und materielle Bedeutung ihrer gemeinsamen Umgebung auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise. Während die Spanier ihr Raumverständnis auf europäisch-christliche Utopien stützten, nutzten die Inka den städtischen Raum, um ihre rituelle Herrschaft über die ungeordnete natürliche Umwelt und deren Bewohner zu feiern. Diese grundlegend unterschiedlichen Weltanschauungen, die sich jeweils vor dem Kontakt mit den Spaniern entwickelt hatten, blieben auch im kolonialen Rahmen bestehen. Tatsächlich behielt das koloniale Cuzco Elemente seiner vorspanischen andinen Identität bei, nachdem die Spanier es besetzt und umgestaltet hatten. Cuzco und seine Bewohner - sowohl Andenbewohner als auch Spanier - passten sich dem neuen kolonialen Kontext an, indem sie indigene Elemente, Ideologien und Entwürfe in ein neues, höchst umstrittenes räumliches Lexikon integrierten.
