Carus' Schrift Über Geistes-Epidemien der Menschheit (1852) beruht auf einem seiner Vorträge. Sie beschreibt ein historisches Panorama des Gruppen- oder Massenwahns -- von der Tanzwut und der Hexenverfolgung bis hin zum Vampirismus und zu den Umtrieben der Märzrevolution 1848. Geistesepidemien wurden zum Teil von verheerenden Seuchen wie der Pest ausgelöst. Als Carus seinen Text verfasste, waren weder Hypnotismus, und Suggestionslehre bekannt, noch war das Zeitalter der Bakteriologie angebrochen -- zwei wissenschaftliche Ansätze, auf die sich die Theorie der Massenpsychologie um 1900 und danach stützen sollte. So spiegelt die vorliegende Schrift den Wissensstand an der Schwelle zum naturwissenschaftlichen Umbruch der Medizin in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wider.
