Diese Studie untersucht das Genre des Patientenportrats und nimmt vor allem ein umfangreiches Bildkonvolut in den Blick; Gemalde, Gouachen und Aquarelle von Tumorkranken aus den Jahren 1835 -1850, gemalt von dem kantonesischen Maler Lam Qua. Entgegen bisheriger Verortungen des Genres im Rahmen der freak shows zeigt die Autorin, dass diese auaergewohnlich scheinenden Bildnisse nicht nur ein global verbreitetes Genre waren, vielmehr waren sie aus einer ideengeschichtlichen Konsequenz hervorgegangen. In einem klinischen Kontext angesiedelt, korrespondierten Patientenportrats mit der Portratmalerei und daruber hinaus mit der popularen Disziplin der Physiognomik und verlangten vom Betrachter eine kognitiv fundierte semiotische Lesung ab.
