Das Set enthält die Bände Nordrhein-Westfalen I Rheinland (2005) und Nordrhein Westfalen II Westfalen (2016). Beide Bände umfassen in gewohnt alphabetischer Folge Städte und Ortschaften, oft mit Einleitungen zu ihrer Geschichte und Gestalt, Einzelobjekte mit Schilderungen ihrer Baugeschichte, Architektur, Ausstattung und kunsthistorischen Stellung sowie umfangreiches Karten- und Planmaterial.
Rheinland: Der Band trägt dem Wandel der Handelsstädte, weltlichen Residenzen und geistlichen Zentren durch die Umwälzungen im 19. Jahrhundert sowie den Veränderungen und Verlusten in Folge des Zweiten Weltkriegs Rechnung. Neben gut erhaltenen Kleinstädten auf dem Land stehen durch die Industrialisierung geformte Stadtlandschaften im westlichen Ruhrgebiet sowie von Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau gezeichnete Stadtkerne. Einzigartige mittelalterliche Kirchenbauten wie die Dome in Köln, Aachen oder Essen werden ebenso gewürdigt wie zentrale Bauten des modernen Kirchenbaus. Neben Burgen und Schlössern werden Industrieanlagen, Verkehrsbauten und das ehemalige Regierungsviertel in Bonn eingehend beschrieben.
Westfalen: Der Dehio Westfalen gibt eine Übersicht über die wichtigsten Bau-und Kunstdenkmäler des nordöstlichen Landesteils von Nordrhein-Westfalen. Neben den traditionellen Denkmälernfinden weitere Denkmalgruppen angemessene Berücksichtigung: bäuerliche und bürgerliche Privatarchitektur, Bauten des Historismus und des 20. Jahrhunderts, Hinterlassenschaften der Industrie sowie Gärten.
