Der Sclavenhändler is a Singspiel in two acts by Christian Friedrich Schwan, originally published in 1790. This historical work offers a glimpse into the musical and theatrical tastes of the late 18th century. As a Singspiel, it blends spoken dialogue with musical numbers, a popular form of German-language opera during that era. The opera explores themes related to the slave trade, providing a historical perspective through the lens of dramatic performance.
This edition makes available a significant work from the classical music repertoire, offering valuable insights into the cultural and social issues of its time. It will be of interest to scholars and enthusiasts of German opera, 18th-century music, and the history of the performing arts.
