Bis 1933 gehörte Hans Purrmann zu den erfolgreichsten Malern der Moderne in Deutschland. Cassirer und Flechtheim waren seine Händler - berühmt war er als Schüler, Mittler und Freund von Henri Matisse.
1935 wurde der 55-jährige Purrmann Leiter der Villa Romana in Florenz, die Max Klinger 1905 als Atelierhaus gegründet hatte. Die Initiatoren der Berufung waren jene Kollegen, mit denen Purrmann in Berlin kurz zuvor um die letzten Freiheiten der Kunst gerungen hatte. Florenz wurde für ihn zum Rückzugs- und Schaffensort, während der Kreis der Gleichgesinnten, die den Süden als Fluchtpunkt wählten, von Jahr zu Jahr grö er wurde.
Die Untersuchung basiert auf der Erschlie ung zahlreicher unbekannter Quellen aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers sowie aus vielen privaten und öffentlichen Archiven.
