English summary: This volume fills a gap in research on religious history of Europe, namely the problem of confessionalism and confessionalisation in non-Western Christian traditions. The studies of this volume focus on the Orthodox Eastern and Southeastern cultures and hereby, enrich the research on European dynamics of Christian denominations after 13th century till now. With the main focus on the Orthodox traditions of the continent, the papers display new perspectives on mechanisms of religious and confessional identity within European Christianity.
German description: In diesem Band liegen die Ergebnisse der Tagung 'Orthodoxa Confessio? Konfessionsbildung, Konfessionalisierung und ihre Folgen in der ostlichen Christenheit Europas (13.-20. Jahrhundert)' vor, das das Leibniz-Institut fur Europaische Geschichte Mainz gemeinsam mit dem Institut fur deutsche Kultur und Geschichte Sudosteuropas an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen veranstaltet hat. Hiermit schlieat sich eine Forschungslucke: Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung wurden die fur West- und Mitteleuropa entwickelten Thesen zu Konfessionsbildung und Konfessionalisierung erstmals systematisch auf ihre Anwendbarkeit fur die spezifischen historischen Kontexte im ostlichen und sudostlichen Europa gepruft. Ihr interdisziplinarer und auf eine Sicht der longue durEe ausgerichteter Zugriff sollte es ermoglichen, einen maageblichen theoriebildenden Beitrag zu einer Neubewertung der europaischen Konfessionsgeschichte unter Einbeziehung des ostkirchlichen Kultur- und Einflussraums zu leisten. Der Band liefert die Basis, auf der weitere empirisch und theoriebildend angelegte Forschungsvorhaben zur konfessionellen Dynamik in Europa aufbauen konnen.
