Der kriegsmüde Taktiker Odysseus versucht nach Hause zu kommen. Doch zwischen ihm und Ithaka liegen keine Abenteuer, sondern Prüfungen, die jeder kennt, nur grö er erzählt: Verführung durch Bedeutung, Entscheidungen ohne saubere Hände, Hunger als Moraltest, Stillstand als schönste Gefangenschaft. Auf Inseln, in Stürmen, in Palästen und am Rand der Gesellschaft sammelt Odysseus nicht nur Narben, sondern eine unbequeme Erkenntnis: Heimkehr ist kein Ort, sondern ein Zustand, den man sich zurück erarbeiten muss. Während Penelope daheim mit kühler Intelligenz eine Belagerung übersteht, wird Odysseus zum Bettler im eigenen Haus - und muss lernen, dass Höflichkeit ebenso töten kann wie das Meer. Am Ende steht nicht der Sieg, sondern die schwierigste Disziplin: Frieden.
Ein Roman über Macht und Sprache, Sehnsucht und Selbsttäuschung - und darüber, dass Heimkehr kein Ort ist, sondern Arbeit.
