Spricht man von der verschollenen Generation , zählt hierzu auch Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993). Nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten musste sie Deutschland verlassen, der Vertreibung folgte das nachhaltige Vergessen. Dabei begann Lasersteins künstlerische Laufbahn vielversprechend: 1927 beendete sie als eine der ersten Frauen das Studium an der Berliner Akademie mit Auszeichnung und machte sich in der Kunstmetropole rasch einen Namen. Ihre Arbeiten stehen der Neuen Sachlichkeit nahe, doch fehlt ihnen die unterkühlte, sezierende Glätte. Lasersteins selbstbewusster Blick auf die Neue Frau, ihre handwerkliche Virtuosität, ihr Spiel mit traditionellen und modernen Bildformeln sowie die Synthese aus Sachlichkeit und Sensibilität, Monumentalität und Intimität verleihen ihren Bildern eine bestechende Zeitgenossenschaft und überzeitliche Aktualität. In letzter Zeit wurden Lasersteins Werke wiederholt in Ausstellungen gezeigt; durch Ankäufe renommierter Museen ist die Malerin sukzessive in den kunsthistorischen Kanon zurückgekehrt. Kenntnisreich analysiert die Autorin das beeindruckende OEuvre und entwirft einfühlsam ein bewegendes Lebensbild der Künstlerin.
