Leopold Bauer studierte bei Otto Wagner an der Akademie der bildenden Künste, wo er später auch unterrichtete. Er bekannte sich als Architekt zunächst zu den Werten der Moderne und versuchte Hygiene, Komfort und Schönheit in seiner Architektur zu vereinen. Mit diesen Motiven, aber unter anderen Vorzeichen schuf er zahlreiche Bauten, Villen und Wohnbauten, aber auch sein Hauptwerk, die im neoklassizistischem Stil erbaute Österreichische Nationalbank in Wien.
Zu dieser Zeit leugnete er jedoch bereits seinen Ansatz als moderner Architekt. Er unterzog Otto Wagner einer scharfen Kritik und trennte sich im Streit auch von seinen einstigen Freunden Adolf Loos und Josef Hoffmann.
Dieses Buch lädt dazu ein, Bauers Werk wieder zu entdecken, das die Kunstgeschichte lange Zeit ignoriert hat.
