Als Muse beeinflusste sie den Surrealisten Man Ray - und verlie ihn zugunsten ihrer eigenen Karriere. Weder privat noch professionell hielt sie sich an Konventionen und ging als Künstlerin, Porträtfotografin und Kriegsreporterin ihren eigenen Weg. Unvergessen sind ihre Aufnahmen der befreiten Konzentrationslager, mit denen sie den Horror und Wahnsinn des Krieges eindrücklich dokumentierte.
